Bendigo Magazine Autumn 2014

A favourite held close to the hearts of locals in the green hills of Glenlyon; a renovated milk bar becomes one of Bendigo's beloved brunch spots; and a family owned greengrocer-meets-cafe with a passion for local farmers and foodie events. Ever curious about the reninvention of the `general store'...and always up for a road-trip and a sweet treat...here are three places I love to visit...

Below are three excerpts from the magazine. You can read more here, or pick up a copy of the Bendigo Magazine locally :)

Bendigo Corner Store Cafe: My first full time job was further from the CBD than I had imagined, so there was no shoe shopping during breaks. There’s only so far you can go with a half hour lunch, and so most days I found myself at the milk bar towards the top end of View Street. It was a classic old-school milk bar…loping trees and painted brickwork on the outside…an actual street corner door for an old corner store.  I’d time my visit to miss the lunch rush of students and tradies which gave me plenty of time to chat with the owners Vin & Sue...
You can find the Bendigo Corner Store Cafe at 305 View Street Bendigo.

Glenlyon General Store: I can never quite decide which I like best on road trips. The freedom of the freeway stretching out before me with a good playlist and space to let my mind wander; or taking an exit and slowing it down in and around the undulating hills, never knowing what’s around the corner.  The latter approach was how I discovered The Old Glenlyon General Store, a little way in from the Malmsbury exit, on the road to Daylesford. Too many times I’d just driven through, but this time I felt like exploring so I made plans to meet a friend at the store for lunch...
You can find Glenlyon General Store at 63 Barkly Street, Glenlyon.

Edwards Greengrocer & Deli: Mandy from Edwards Greengrocer, Deli & Cafe is one of those people who you may have only just met, but it feels like you’ve known her forever. With a genuine warmth and infectious smile, she can talk about her passion for Edwards and local produce literally until the cows come home!  Fourth generation farmers from Axe Creek, she and her husband Greg understand the importance of supporting local suppliers and the positive flow on effects into the community this can have.  Having a love for good food but living so far from the centre of Bendigo with a young family, they saw a need to have a greengrocer/café/deli much closer to home...
You can find Edwards Greengrocer & Deli at Shop 6, 25-33 Blucher Street (next to the Post Office), Strathfieldsaye

The recipe for Mandy's gorgeous Raspberry, Chocolate & Almond Tea Cake (originally from Delicious Magazine) that was mentioned in the article can be found in a previous blog post here.
